How to design ship propeller

Last week someone sent me an email requesting help on how to design a ship propeller. He has been writing his final assignment for an undergraduate program for 5 years. He still cannot finish it just because he does not have literature or textbooks about propeller design. Well, propeller design is not a subject that all naval architects studied when they were taking an undergraduate program. Yes, they study resistance and propulsion of ships but going deeper in to the subject or the design of marine screw propeller is not always the choice that every naval architect will do. The science of propeller design, actually lies between two fields of co-related engineering which are naval architecture and marine engineering. And  the guy who asked for help is not studying any of them. He studies mechanical engineering. I think that's the reason why he finds that propeller design is very complicated. It is difficult even for naval architects and marine engineers, so it is not surprising to see how difficult it will be for someone who does not study ship propulsion and tries to design a propeller.

A propeller might look like a fan that you use in your house or office. But the complexity of designing a propulsion device that moves or drives a ship in a sea water is huge. Well, I will not blame him for choosing such difficult subject for his final assignment which we in Indonesia like to call Skripsi. What I am going to say now is read the following steps to design a ship's propeller:

Kamome Propeller from Japan

1. First of all, you need a number of data for the calculation of ship resistance. They are LBP or Length Between Perpendiculars; LWL: Length on Load Waterline; Breadth of Ship; Draft of Ship; Displacement of ship in cubic meters; Position of Center of Buoyancy; Waterplane area coefficient; midship section coefficient, wetted hull area (including the rudder and the appendages; and then the maximum diameter of a propeller. For the calculation of ship resistance, please find an article entitled: An Approximate Power Prediction Method by J. Holtrop and GGJ Mennen, and A Statistical Re-analysis of Resistance and Propulsion Data by J. Holtrop. After performing the calculation, you will get a curve depicting the relationship between effective power and ship speed.
2. From the EHP or now better known as effective power (PE), find the delivered power, shaft power, and brake power. Perform two calculations which are forward calculation for determining the engine rate of the ship and then the backward calculation for redetermining the delivered power that will be used for calculating the coefficents of Bp and delta.
3. Most propeller designer will use Troost series propeller which is now known as standard B series propeller from Netherlands Ship Model Basin (NSMB) which is now known as MARIN.
4. After pitch diameter ratio, the rpm, and the pitch of the propeller the next step in propeller design is calculating the blade area ratios. These ratios can only be obtained after the designer has performed propeller cavitation calculation which is usually based on Burril Method. Then, we get Projected Area Ratio, Developed Blade Area Ratio or Expanded Area Ratio from Burril Cavitation Chart.
5. Now the principal dimensions of the propellers have been obtained. But we cannot put these numbers on paper in the form of design drawing. We must perform propeller strength calculation to obtain blade thickness diameter ratio. The method that we, as naval architects or marine engineers, use here is Taylor Method.
6. The last task is drawing. We draw the design or our new propeller based on the standard B-Series propeller using Holst Method. Here, I can say that the design stage is finished.
Still confused about my explanation? Read two reference books that I recommend to you: the first, a very old book, Resistance, Propulsion and Steering of Ships written by Professor Van Lammeren and the second, also an old book The Design of Marine Screw Propeller by T.P.O. Brien.
I hope the one who asked the procedure of designing and calculating the blade thickness of propeller read this post. by Charles Roring

Miami Beach restaurants, shops

Miami Beach
Made up of 17 islands in Biscayne Bay, Miami Beach is a separate city from Miami. In recent years “American Riviera” has received the carefree spirit of the early 1920s by renewing its South Beach area. Today South Beach revels in world glory as a lure for models and millionaires. The hub of South Beach is the 1 square mi Art Deco District which stretches along Ocean Drive and is the most talked about beachfront in America. About 800 significant buildings in the district are listed on the National Register of Historic Places – it is the nation’s first 20th century district to be honored as such.

Begin your tour of the Art Deco District at the Art Deco District Welcome Center. Proceed north past pastel hue Art Deco hotels (outlined in brilliant neon at night) on your left and the palm fringed beach on your right. You will also pass the magnificently restored Casa Casuarinas home of the late fashion designer Gianni Versace. The neighborhood’s two main commercial streets are Collins Avenue, on block west of Ocean Drive and one block farther west Washington Avenue. The latter is a colorful mix of Jewish, Cuban, Haitian and more familiar American cultures, containing delicatessens, avant-garde stores, produce markets, shops selling religious artifacts, and many of the city’s best restaurants and night clubs. Espanola Way off Washington is a quaint avenue with a youth hostel, clubs restaurants and ethnic shops a later afternoon flea market is held here each Sunday. Three blocks north is the Lincoln Road Mall, a lively pedestrian shopping street with upscale restaurants, eclectic shops and great people watching.

Better security systems

In United States during 1874, some telegraph delivery companies who were operating for many years and about 57 such companies attached and started as American District Telegraph. The ADT group and ventured into more fields like fire alarms and burglar alarms and joined as a public owned company in 1960s. ADT Security System that include the positioning and have a close watching over the alarming equipments installed by the ADT. The customer monitoring centers (CMC) receives the electronic signals from an alarm system. When an alarm is triggered due to invasion by the intruders, fire and etc the officers at the monitoring center will check out the data received from the alarm system and ascertain the signal and necessitating any action. Based on the type of alarm the monitoring specialist will contact through the phone and find out whether the signal is genuine or false. Duly confirming, he can intimate fire service, local police or other emergency departments according to the need.

In fact I have been looking for sort of providing home security system for my house. I am very much convinced and pleased when I came to know of the above ADT Security and rightly installed the ADT key chain remote for my house. They are providing excellent home security services since 1874 and definitely our browsers would go in for the above ADT security systems by and large. Regarding the ADT Key chain remote that can be activated from any portion of our house, the key chain is incorporated with a panic button that activates the alarm up to 75 ft. from the house providing the added security.

National and State Parks in Alaska

Denali National Park Alaska
Alaska has more land in national parks, wilderness areas and national wildlife refuges than all the other states combined. Denali National Park and Preserve is home to North America’s tallest peak, Mt. McKinley and the admission fee to this park is very nominal. Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve is a marine preserve where 17 spectacular glaciers meet tidewater and seals float on icebergs. Huge coastal brown bears fish for salmon in the Brooks River and other wild, remote clear-water streams at Katmai National Park and Preserve is a mixture of volcanic moonscape, rugged coast, large lake systems, mountains and forested low lands on the Alaska Peninsula.

On the Kenai Fjords National Park known for its tide water glaciers, rugged fjords and abundant marine wild life. The country’s largest national park, Wrangell-St. Elias east of Anchorage along the Canadian border s six times the size of Yellowstone. Chugach State Park near Anchorage, has more than 100 mi of hiking trails, wildlife viewing and easily accessible wilderness. Denali State Park has a ridge top trail with views of the Alaska Range and public use cabins.

Enthralling gaming platforms

The internet betting games have expanded ever since their introduction in the year 1996. By playing online casino the players are also feeling the freedom to select from variety of sites. Some centers are allowing gaming software programmes so the players can download and immediately commence play. Having decided to enroll to the online the player first of all should open an account with the sites operator ahead and chose a betting amount. Afterwards the player is able to select the required online casino like video poker and Roulette to Keno and so on. The customer must ensure whatever type of gaming platform he chooses its reliability.

The poker tournaments are really tough and allow a player to challenge another player or many players and highlight the individual talents and thus take home some good amount through winning. In the online gaming system Cherry Red is an obvious choice to many players for its fairness dealings. You can play the game instantly and you can install the free software in your computer also. They are giving a free welcome bonus of $7,777 now. You can play Black Jack, Video poker, slots, etc. They are providing the customer care for all the 24 hours and 7 days. This group clearly instigates and envisages among the players to trust the site’s gaming experience.

ELECTRIC/GAS POWERED TUK-TUK FOR MELAKA AS WELL?

23rd. February 2010

Why not we introduce the electric driven or natural gas driven "Tuk-Tuk" ( 3 wheeled mini-trishaws ) for visitors and Malaccans to travel easily around Melaka? Some tuk-tuks of Thailand are designed to incorporate air-conditioning in their cabs and are gas driven or electric driven.

Electric or gas driven tuk-tuks can be brought in at lower costs and implemented easily on existing roads. They should be tried and tested for road worthiness and safety on our Malacca roads. They should be used for short and medium range distance and within the heritage area. Being green, these tuk-tuks are environmentally friendly, minimum noise and do not pollute the heritage area.

We call upon the Melaka Historical City Council to expedite such a study and buy some units of these electric tuk-tuks for trial runs and test their effectiveness.

Let us think out of the box and also learn from our neighbouring country like Bangkok on this matter.

NATURAL GAS POWERED TRAM SYSTEM FOR MELAKA PROPOSED

23rd. February 2010

Melaka State Government want to introduce tram service system starting from Old Ayer Keroh Road (Jalan Ayer Keroh Lama) to the City center for an effort to reduce the traffic jam especially in tourist main area like Banda Hilir.

Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd. Ali Rustam Said that the tram proposal will be tabled in the State Exco Meeting this week.

If the tram service becomes a reality, it will be not just another Public Transportation but a tourism product because the nature of the service itself.

Of course tram is not the fastest public transportation available if we compare it to buses or taxis. But when we go to Melbourne Australia for example, rather than using the bus, we are very keen to try the Melbourne Metropolitan Tram to enjoy it. Like sitting in an classic locomotive but at the middle of the road with car and motorcycle.

Just a few existing tram systems are available in Asia and Malaysia have none. Other countries with trams are India, Japan and Hong Kong. Hong Kong trams are historical artifacts as the service was started in early of 20th century.

Webmaster: The proposed tram system should compliment the existing transporting systems currently available. Also, it should be integrated with them as well. Prompt, efficient and clean service is needed while the fares should be fair and reasonable. If possible, the electric tram system should be self propelled with light weight re-chargeable batteries/gas powered so that we do not have to install ugly electric guides to propel these trams. By doing so, only the railtrack is placed onto the road without the electric cables installed above.

Tan and Linda are leaving the Manokwari rainforest for Norway

Two Norwegian students (Linda and Tan) are leaving for Norway tomorrow. They have been doing field research in Manokwari for nearly a month. Their stay in Manokwari has been a unique experience for them. And the data which they have collected, during their visit to Papua, will be used for composing their thesis on the implementation of the UNREDD program for the community based forest protection that is vital in fighting global warming.
Paul Warere (local forest guide) and Tan (an Indian-Norwegian student)
All of us here in Manokwari can only hope that the good and bad experiences which they have faced in Papua will enrich their life so that they will understand how beautiful the rainforest is, how unique the culture of the indigenous Papuan, and how uncomfortable it is for someone to suffer from Malaria Tropica, ha..ha..ha....(laugh).
The Norwegian students, and all of us of course have the same opinion, the view that the whole world community share that the tropical rainforest has to be preserved for the next generations of human being. The indigenous people of Papua have the exclusive rights over their rainforest, but they MUST NOT abuse this important world heritage. It is the responsibility of the whole world community to help the Papuan people and other indigenous tribes in Amazon of Congo in Africa preserve their rainforest.
We pray that their air trip to Norway will be calm so that they will arrive in their country in good condition to meet their loved ones. Happy Traveling - by Charles Roring

Miniature of Arfak House as Souvenir

The traditional wooden house from the Arfak tribe in Manokwari is called Rumah Kaki Seribu or A-Thousand-Feet house. Its form is unique. The house is built on a lot of wooden pillars that protect the people in the house from the high humidity of the ground, and wild boars or snakes. Unfortunately the design of this house does not have enough openings (windows) for air ventilation and natural lighting. The modernization and improvements in the standard of living of the Papuan city dwellers have resulted in the abandonment of the traditional house styles mostly in the Papuan cities. We can only see such houses now in the rural or mountainous areas. To preserve the existence of these houses, the committee for the commemoration of Gospel Preaching Day conducts the annual competition for the construction of the replicas of the Rumah Kaki Seribu throughout the city area. Most Papuan youth groups in Manokwari city participate in the competition.

In addition, some Papuan artists have made miniature of the Papuan traditional houses as souvenirs for domestic and foreign tourists. The souvenirs of Rumah Kaki Seribu are sold in various souvenir shops in the city. The price of the house miniature varies according to size and attention to details. The cheapest is around Rp. 200,000 (20 US dollars) whereas the expensive one can reach up to Rp. 2.5 million rupiahs (or around 250 US dollars).

When tourists buy miniatures of the Kaki Seribu house, they have directly supported the economic livelihood of the Papuan people, especially the artists. I am writing this post to promote this kind of souvenir so that when you come to Manokwari as a tourist, you might be interested in buying one of them. You can go to Losmen KAGUM to find the house miniature or visit Ms. Fonataba and Mr. Asaribab, two Papuan artists who also sell miniatures of Rumah Kaki Seribu in Manokwari. I hope that the articles about eco-tourism which I upload into this blog will be able to attract more foreign travelers to this town to enjoy the beautiful Papuan natural scenery and the hospitality of Papuan people. by Charles Roring

Whale Shark Capital of the World Your Next Vacation Destination in the Philippines

Shark seeing will be among the highlights of that Philippines has to offer when you are planning to take a extreme vacation adventure in the Philippines. If you are intrigue to visit this popular tourist attraction for the whale sharks in the Philippines your destination is in Donsol, Sorsogon- the Whale Shark Capital of the World.

Donsol is a popular tourist destination for the whale sharks that can be seen in the bordering seas. Swimming with whale sharks was featured as the Best Animal Encounter in Asia by Time Magazine in 2004. Since the discovery of hundreds of whale sharks congregating in the town of Donsol, Sorsogon the place became a word of mouth passed on to every tourist exploring the Philippines. Their presence became a major income generator, as thousands arrive each season to swim and witness the friendly behavior of these giant fish, bringing high revenue to an economy initially reliant to fishing and cottage industry alone.

The presence of whale Sharks in the town of Donsol was known to the local residents over 100 years. But the locals believed these gentle giants where sharks and dangerous. This wrong notion changed when in January 1998, a group of scuba divers led by Romir Aglugub – a PADI diving instructor, discovered its presence, and interacted and came in contact with the Whale Sharks. Even the members of the diving group of Romir was having second thought if the fish is docile, until the instructor led the way into the water and came in contact with the whale shark.

Copy of video footage taken by the group was passed on to the media and the WWF-Philippines. The original amateur video is on file by the Instructor as proof of the first video recording of the Discovery. Contrary to the fears and hearsays this large whale shark “butanding” are harmless because it is a filter feeder. It was also discovered by a marine biologist that it is ovoviviparous which simply means that the female butanding produces live offspring from eggs hatched in her uterus. By March 1998, Donsol became world-class tourist destination and now known as the “Whale Shark Capital of the World”.

Whale sharks can be seen between November and June, with presence peaking between February and May. These gentle giants arrive from as early as November but the official season starts from February and runs until end of May, where the sea of Donsol is at its clearest and calmest. Local tourism officials and professional divers have established guidelines on proper whale shark watching intended to maintain safety and to defend the creatures from over exploitation. Iteraction with the whale sharks is regulated by the local Department of Tourism (DOT) office. WWF guidelines are generally observed to protect the sharks. Rules include limiting the number of swimmers per boat to six, no scuba divers and staying further than three meters from the sharks. In practice many of these rules are broken on a daily basis. As many as 14 boats at a time may 'mob' a shark, with up to 30 or 40 swimmers following the shark on the surface. Most sharks are touched at least once during every interaction, accidentally by brushing with the fins, or deliberately

Previous practiced by fishermen of hunting and plundering the stock of whale sharks as extra income because of the shark's high demand for their meat for the delicacies, aphrodisiac and the medicinal by-products was also a headache to the government. As to preserve its number, the Philippine government has banned this practice and declared the whale shark as an endangered species in 1998. In return the fishermen were educated about the value of whale sharks and trained as tour guides as their alternate livelihood especially during the fishing lean season. At the same time the government and the people are working hand in hand to protect the eco tourism of the country.

Already eager to take your shark seeing vacation destination in the Philippines? Surely you can personally see, swim and interact with these gentle giants. So here is a simple tips that might help when you reach the place: hire a boat, a spotter, find a shark and slip in the water along side the creature. No flash cameras are forbidden since flash photography are not allowed so don't bothered in looking for one and be sure you have your Scuba gears (rental is available) and snorkeling gears before going. The town of Donsol, Sorsogon, holds and celebrates Annual Butanding Festival in the month of April so it is also a good idea to visit the place during that period as to enjoy the party within the place.

Propeller blade thickness ordinates

When a naval architect has finished the design calculation of a propeller, he will continue his work by drawing it. The method of drawing a marine screw propeller is usually based on Holst. Please, read page 204 of the Resistance, Propulsion and Steering of Ships by Prof. W.P.A. Van Lammeren or Marine Propellers and Propulsion for more explanation about it.
Those who want to be a propeller designer must know the basics of propeller geometry. There is a very good Youtube video which explains the science of propeller geometry. Watch the following video before you proceed to the design calculation and the drawing of a marine screw propeller.

Before the developed blade sections can be drawn, the propeller designer must obtain the values of  the  positions of Center Line (CL) of the propellers at each blade section radius (usually from r/R = 0.2 to 0.9 or 1.0) relative to the TE (Trailing Edge) and LC (Leading Edge). In theory, the Developed Area Ratio (AD/A0) is assumed to be similar to the Expanded Area Ratio of the marine screw propeller. By determining the positions of CL, we can place the positions of the maximum blade thickness ordinates for every radius (r/R) based on the standard percentages that are provided by the book.  For the thickness ordinates relative to trailing and leading edge of each blade section radius , the values are derived as percentages of thicknesses compared to the maximum thickness at each radius of the blade. The safe value for blade thickness diameter ratio is obtained from Propeller Strength Calculation usually using Taylor formulas.

Please keep in mind that the percentage of the blade thickness ordinates that I discuss in this post is for the standard  B-Series propeller which is provided by NSMB (the Netherlands Ship Model Basin). The table and the drawing of the newly designed propeller presented in this article is from by undergraduate final assignment The Propeller Design of Open Hatch Bulk Carrier (OHBC) DWT 45,000 metric tons. by Charles Roring

Car Security Camera - Putting Car Thieves Behind Bars in

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Security camera systems for cars are a new type of protection for your car that many people have regarding the safety of a satisfactory smile on his face on the implications for the bad. These types of digital cameras are usually fed.

Because of modern technology, their size has dramatically to the point that they can now stay hidden in most any part of the vehicle reduced. These cameras typically have memory chips that have built the capability to record up to680 pictures. Both the time and date are automatically printed out on all the picture frames which can then be utilized as solid evidence and accepted in the court of law.

Stolen Vehicle Tracking System

The miniature cameras that are on the market nowadays have the ability to be installed in a discreet section of the vehicle. These car security systems are useful within a car since they can do verifications when it comes to identifying carjackers, robbers, as well as Vandalism. Thefts of vehicles are usually temporary thefts, quick strip bass are divided into categories, and exports.

Thefts that are temporary, as usual in the category as a vehicle for a joy ride, or be used as vehicles during and sometimes after committing a robbery and theft parties. Sports and other fast vehicles are the typical objectives.

Fast strips are vehicles that are subjected to a local garage, commonly referred to as "Chop Shop", where the vehicle is then described, its most precious parts removed, are then sold on the black market. In this type of theft the original car is never normally seen.

In case of export car theft, thieves who then stole the vehicle, where it is then rapidly exported from the country and sold to the highest bidder.

A modern security system camera car usually use infrared film in black and white digital cameras, the ability to make images for the moment that have some kindMovement for the environment in mind. There are other types of cameras, which change depending on image and not the movement. These images can be obtained by setting the time at which the camera ranges of 1-60 seconds. Normally, the time and date will be automatically printed on the picture to get.

A camera system known as the Cyber Eye Camera has the ability to capture and store images on a chip, 2 GB of memory, which will be extended if you wish, you can. TheseCameras have the ability to be controlled by remote control, and the built-in infrared sensors can also snapshots of people in the dark with a range of up to ten meters away. Captured images have the opportunity to be seen on a television screen to identify the thief.

There are also on the open market, other wireless camera car security systems, which have the ability to remote control. Some of these cameras have a switch that is operated by footwhen the driver has the ability to activate the camera systems, without the attention or alarming the offender. Some of these systems have a security camera car optional wireless siren which functions as an effective type of alarm, so that the attention of the owner of the vehicle for a burglary to take pictures of the offender.

Eucalyptus Deglupta Boat Building Material in Manokwari of Papua

When I was walking with Russian tourists (Mikhail, Inga and Dima) inside the tropical rainforest of the Table Mountain of Manokwari Papua, we saw a tree whose bark was similar to army uniform. Its extraordinary colored bark will always attract the attention of anybody who passes by the tree. At that time I only knew that its name was eucalyptus. One moneth later, after reading an article in the worldagroforestrycentre.org, I just knew that it name is eucaplytus deglupta and its wood can be used for boat building. In the Molucan islands the most common wood that is used by boat builders is gofasa or gupasa wood (vitex cofassus). This wood is used for hull skin and hull frames in small passenger and fishing boats. The gufasa wood is more resistant to marine borers compared to eucalyptus. So, eucaplytus may be more suitable for boat interior or furniture. In West Papua the indigenous people are not aware that eucalyptus has high economic values.
The Dutch introduced the plantation of eucalyptus seedlings in the Table Mountain of Manokwari in 1950s. Mature eucalyptus trees absorb a lot of water during dry season.  That's why this kind of tree species is more suitable to be grown along a big river or swampy land.
I have not known the motivation of the Dutch government for planting the eucalyptus in the Table Mountain. Perhaps they want to get their seeds for opening large eucalyptus deglupta's plantation in commercial scale for pulp and paper industry in Papua at that time. Now, the tree is an interesting tourist attraction for foreign travelers who visit the Table Mountain of Manokwari Papua. by Charles Roring

Propeller Blades and Ship Vibration

Sometimes when we are sailing on a small motor boat, we feel that the vibration is high. This is probably caused by mistakes done during the selection of propeller. I often see a brochure from the manufacturer of a marine diesel engine which shows that the propeller and the engine is provided as one package.
As a matter of fact the propeller that is supplied by an engine manufacture might not be suitable for the boat's hull when moving at sea. When a boat owner or builder is ordering an engine, the selection of the propeller has to be given to a propeller designer, a naval architect or a marine engineer who has the knowledge of calculating the ship resistance and effective power and translating it into the engine selection and propeller design for the boat.
Usually to reduce the vibration, a propeller designer will add the number of blades from 2 or 3 to 4 or 5. For passenger ships, the number of blades (Z) for the propeller can be around 5 to 7 blades depending on the size of the ship and the rpm of the engine. The higher the number of blades, the lower will be the propulsion efficiency. The propeller designer will have to compromise such contradicting factors to achive the best dimensions before the design drawing of this propeling unit could be sent to the propeller manufacturer for production stage.
Watch the following Youtube video to have a closer look of how the rotation of a ship propeller creates vibration.

A Visit to Raimuti island in Manokwari Papua

Last January three Russian tourists visited Raimuti island. It is the smallest island in the Dorey bay of Manokwari Papua. These Russian tourists were Mikhail, Dima and Inga. They spent two weeks hiking around the Table Mountain, the Mansinam island, and then snorkling and fishing in the Raimuti island.
According to their opinion, Raimuti was a small but beautiful place. It is located near Arfai beach, only around two hundred meters from the main Papua land. There are some mangrove trees growing in the island. These vegetations help prevent the island from erosion that can eliminate the whole island from Papua map. Fortunately, not many people visit the island, that's way it still exists until now. Raimuti has been used by fishermen as a resting place or as a place to find fish bait.

A friend of mine, an indigenous Papuan said that there is a sunken warplane wreck around the waters of the Raimuti island. Unfortunately, he did not mention the exact location of the planewreck. The island is also surrounded by coral reef which is an important habitat for fish and other marine creatures.
If you are interested in visiting the island, you can hire a boat that belongs to the fishermen at Arfai beach. Usually its cost is Rp. 100,000 per day. I suggest that you bargain to get the suitable price. Don't forget to bring your own gear if you want to scuba dive around Raimuti, Lemon, and Mansinam islands.

Hostel in Manokwari

I have been writing about the ecotourism activities in Manokwari again since the beginning of this year. And some readers of this blog have shown their interest to come to this beautiful town. The first thing that you need to find when you have landed on the Rendani Airport is to find a hostel or hotel which you can stay while traveling around the town and its surrounding environment. There are several hotels in Manokwari ranging from 1 star to 4 stars which is far more expensive than hostels. You can find more information by typing such keywords as hotels in Manokwari in Google or Yahoo search engine.
Most foreign tourists who come or visit Manokwari are nature lovers. They prefer to stay in hostels which are located closer to nature. Besides they are cheaper, they are located in quiet places such as the Missi and Kampung Ambon Atas areas. There are two hotels that I know.

Losmen KAGUM
It is a hostel that is located on Jalan Brawijaya (the road to Klim en Daal school). The Losmen KAGUM is behind Xavier Bookstore, next to SD Padma 1 (formerly St. Vincentius). It is operated by Miss Ivana Roring (manager). Its rate is between Rp. 150,000 and Rp. 180,000/ per room per night (around 15 to 18 US dollars) depending on the room that you choose.
If you stay for more than three days in the Losmen Kagum then the owner of the hostel can provide free pick up service from and to the airport. To book a room in Losmen Kagum, I suggest that you contact Ms. Ivanna Roring at the following address Her cell phone number is +62 81 283 07 331. You can also contact her through our home based telephone +62 986 211618. E-mail: peace4wp@gmail.com. Also read: Cheap Hotel in Manokwari
When you stay in the hostel, in the morning you will get free breakfast. You can ask the owner if you want to customize the food that you like to eat such as changing nasi goreng or bread with cereal and milk.
You can also use internet for free if you want to send email to your friends and relatives back home.

The management of the Kagum hostel can provide assistance in organizing your tour to interesting places such as traveling inside the tropical rainforest of Table Mountain, Exporing the Natural Caves inside the tropical rainforest for bat and lizard watching, swimming at the beautiful beaches such as the white sandy beaches of Pasir Putih, Yonsoribo and Masni.
You can also be escorted to Mansinam, Lemon and Raimuti islands where you can enjoy swimming, snorkeling, and even scuba diving (bring your own diving gear) with fewer people around. The hotel has Charles Roring and Paul Warere as your guide and translator which can show you around the interesting tourist attractions the Manokwari regency has. Manokwari is a beautiful town. It is surrounded by Arfak Mountain, Table Mountain and Three Small Islands that protect the Dorey bay from big waves from the eastern sea of the Geelvink or Cendrawasih bay. Charles Roring can be contacted through his email: lroring@yahoo.com
Another hostel that I recommend to tourists is YAT Losmen. It is located in Kampung Ambon Atas. I haven't been there but I know that it is run by a foundation that also have programs on the empowernment of the indigenous Papuan. Please, type YAT Losmen Manokwari in Google, Bing or Yahoo to find more information about it.

What you need when traveling inside rainforest

I like going into the tropical rainforest of Papua. I have been doing it since I was in elementary school. Green trees, exotic wild life, sounds of beautiful birds always attract my attention. Since the beginning of this year I began escorting tourists to the Table Mountain of Manokwari. Most often when we are in the middle of the forest, we will need a machete to create pathway when we see that the bush a head of us is impenetrable. We also need it to cut wood for making tents and campfire. I always suggest foreign tourists to set up camps near a village. But it is not always possible.

walking-through-the-rainfor.jpg
For tourists who are in the middle of the jungle, the safest place to build a camp is the river bank. Why? Because when we stay in the forest for several days, we will need water, we need to cook some food and we need to clean our body. When we feel that our staying time in the forest is over, we need water from the river to put out the fire completely to make sure that it will not spread into big fire that can cause dangerous forest fire.
So, based on that explanation, if we stay inside the forest for several days, besides bringing some machetes, we will need a tent, some small rope, and eating and cooking utensils. Most tourists will not go deeper into the jungle but for nature lovers, biologists, or researchers, they will need to go further into the interior region of the Papuan mountains where the forest is still in its pristine condition and no hunters or villagers around. If it is the case then we need GPS equipment, or map, satellite phone, head light, torch, several sleeping bags and enough food.
From my personal experience, I always ask one or two local Papuan as forest guides who can also use their skills in making traps to catch small but edible animals that we can eat when we are running out of food in the forest. But we must always keep in mind that we must minimize any destruction when we travel inside the forest by not cutting bush if it is not necessary, by not throwing plastic garbage and by not killing animals except for food. Actually there are many foods inside the forest such as fruits, edible tubers, vegetables, and fish, so hunting wild animals such as boars, cuscus, soa-soa, tree kangaroo or deer must not be done.

camping-in-manokwari.jpg Some tourists bring anti malaria pills and first aid kit. Indigenous Papua know a number of plant species for curing malaria, and other tropical diseases, I usually ask them to explain these medicinal herbs to the tourists whom I escort with the Papuan guide when we walk in the forest. The last time when I accompanied an Indian- Norwegian student, my Papuan colleague showed her a tree whose resin has the merit of curing asthma. When he cut its bark, she tastes some of the resin hoping that it can cure the disease that she suffers from.
The last but not the least, we need to bring digital camera or video recorder to make some documentation for our trip. by Charles Roring
